Hi beautiful friend,
In this newsletter, I wanted to share some thoughts on what would have been my 20th wedding anniversary this week. It was a day filled with contemplation about the young, naive girl I was when I entered that marriage. I believed it would somehow fill the emptiness I felt inside and make everything okay. Unfortunately, things didn’t turn out as I had dreamed; in fact, they were far from it. Seven of those nine years were spent in bed, struggling with narcotics, and facing immense emotional, physical, and spiritual turmoil. The suffering was profound, and we both caused each other a lot of pain. Yet, I still consider that experience one of the most important experiences in my life.
In the video, I discuss how it was a part of my awakening. Eric and I thank the universe for my ex-husband every single night in our prayers. I genuinely appreciate the role his soul played in my journey, even though it was incredibly painful.
I love this naive, young version of me. So hopeful that this marriage could fix me or make me whole. Her heart was so earnest.
I’d love to hear from you. Have you ever faced a situation where you thought your world was falling apart, only to find it opened the door to a more beautiful life or a truer version of yourself? Please share your stories in the comments.
I love you all and every part of you,
Ruthie

The Invitation of Pain In-Person Event
When we experience pain, we are instructed to medicalize our pain to make it go away. We learn to see our bodies as the enemy and forget the identity outside of the pain. But we can learn to experience and understand pain differently, even coming to see pain as the route back home to who we really are. In this way, the pain becomes the invitation back to our bodily selves - reminding us how to love ourselves more fully, teaching us that we can heal regardless of whether the pain goes away or not.
Explore a new perspective on pain with Ruthie Lindsey and Hillary McBride. On November 16th, 2024, this event in Nashville offers a chance to rethink how you relate to pain and discover new pathways to wellness. Connecting with ourselves through our bodies is valuable; experiencing this together in person can enhance that connection to another level. We hope you’ll join us for this meaningful experience. I love that young Ruthie. So much of the essence of you resides in her keen face. Made me misty.
This was a beautiful post that really resonated with me. Thank you so much Ruthie. I also married young, at 21 (just a baby!) and went through a traumatic, heart-rending divorce just two years later. Of course I expected that marriage to be the rest of my life, that husband to be my "forever person", our wedding vows to be honored. I was so hopeful, yet so unaware of my own wounds and expectations, and stories about love and worth. Ultimately, when something isn't right for our soul, it has a way of coming undone. My marriage imploded. I thought I would never love again. Yet, that undoing has been the greatest gift of my life. That darkness taught me things that never would have surfaced in the light. It took many years of hard work, healing, forgiveness, and grace to arrive. But here I am - living a life beyond my wildest dreams with a partner beyond my highest hopes. All that pain, all that heartbreak, all that betrayal has been redeemed. It helped me come home. Ultimately, it has set me free.
