Why self-compassion is one of the greatest gifts you can offer yourself

Self-compassion is critically important for mental and emotional well-being, and numerous scientific studies over the past two decades have supported this. According to research—especially from psychologist Dr. Kristin Neff, who I had the honor of sharing a meal with a few weeks ago in Austin, a pioneer in the field—self-compassion is strongly linked to resilience, motivation, emotional regulation, and overall mental health.

I remember learning in my coaching training that there was a huge study done with hundreds of people, and they were all broken into different groups, each committing to different healing modalities like breathwork, therapy, exercise, diet change, EMDR, acupuncture, meditation, self-compassion practices, and many more.

Guess which one had the greatest impact and moved the needle the most on their healing journeys? SELF COMPASSION! We are so freaking hard on ourselves and no one on this planet has ever healed through shame!

I have been notoriously hard on myself from as early as I can remember. Hateful, honestly, beating myself up and shaming myself for my very human mistakes. I know I am not alone in this. We are handed a lot of stories of what is so wrong with us and capitalism, and many religions teach us that we are broken and we need something outside of ourselves to make us loving and worthy. I inherited those stories in my DNA. As early as I can remember I believed I was broken and I beat the shit out of myself for all the ways i wasnt measuring up.

As I have said many times, I will only share with you the things that I have needed and continue to need for myself, the things that have moved the needle for me on my journey. I would love to share with you some really tender practices and tools to bring more self-compassion and care into your life. You are so deserving of so much tenderness and love, sweet friend. I can't wait to be with you tomorrow at 1 PM CT. This is for all of my paying Substack members - upgrade your subscription today to join us live!
